2:00 PM: Integrating ATSDR Brownfield/Land Reuse Tools for Quick Assessment of Hazards
ATSDR will showcase two brownfield/Land Reuse tools: One is a customizable, searchable site inventory tool that is used to rapidly screen sites. It highlight chemicals above comparison values (i.e. regulatory levels) used by ATSDR. This leads to a rapid assessment for site prioritization. The maximum concentration for each chemical and each media is compared against the relevant ATSDR comparison value. Exceedances are highlighted for further evaluation. This tool can be used at the community level to also create inventories of land reuse/brownfields sites. Baker Technical Institute high school students, for example, are using the Site Tool to inventory as many as 80 suspected brownfields in Baker City, Oregon. The second tool is a quick look utility to view ATSDR comparison values. Comparison Values (CVs) are concentrations of a substance in air, water, or soil that is unlikely to cause harmful health effects in exposed people. The CV is used as a screening level during the public health assessment process. Substances found in amounts greater than their CVs might be selected for further evaluation in the public health assessment process. Comparison values maybe available for cancer, non-cancer or both endpoints.

3:15 PM: Stronger Neighborhoods Through Strategic Decisions
Legacy cities face many diverse challenges, with limited resources available to address them. The Relocal Tool provides data-driven strategic solutions for tackling vacant and abandoned properties with practical, parcel-level recommendations. Relocal is designed to work in cities where planning, reinvestment, and demolition decisions can be highly politicized. Relocal quantifies neighborhood strengths and challenges using 70-plus metrics across 8 categories and a community survey to gather residents’ priorities. The analysis results in an parcel-level recommendations for every vacant building and empty lot in the study area. Neighborhoods in Cincinnati, Ohio and Little Rock, Arkansas are utilizing the Relocal Tool to guide demolition decisions, craft incentives, target sidewalk repairs, influence public acquisition plans, and partner with nonprofits among other opportunities. The Relocal Tool lays out sustainable long-range uses for neighborhoods and vacant properties based on real, comprehensive data and community priorities resulting in efficient use of scarce public resources.

10:30 AM: Applying In-situ Thermal Remediation Technologies to Reach Closure at Difficult Sites

In situ thermal remediation (ISTR) technologies are proven methods of quickly and completely remediating contaminant source areas and enhancing the remediation of dissolved phase plumes. 11:15 AM: LandWatch to Protect Remedy Components to Assure Safe Use
Enduring success of a brownfield development depends on maintaining the integrity of any engineering controls (ECs) or institutional controls (ICs). LandWatch is a nationwide web service detecting land use and activities potentially breaching an EC or ICs, alerting owner or regulator, and transmitting safe-use advisories to at-risk stakeholders. 3:00 PM: New York State Brownfield Cleanup Program After the 2015 Amendments
